Each Weekly Reads plan takes one book across four days of whole-class reading, in ten to fifteen minutes a day. This example plan is built around Slugs, and this page provides you with both the plan and access to an ebook.
The Book: Slugs
Slugs is a short vowel title, and the first of thirty books in our Purposeful Practice Nonfiction Animal Decodables. You can read the whole ebook right here.
When you have the books, you'll display a physical book under a document camera so students can see the print. Our Comprehensive Classroom sets include six copies of each title, so books can go in children's hands during or after the Weekly Read.
It's transformative for a child to be swept up in a chorus of classmates, to think, “Hey, I can read this!”
Weekly Reads Guide
What a week looks like
Each day takes ten to fifteen minutes.
| Day | What students do |
|---|---|
| 1. Meet the Book | Practice phonemic awareness and decoding in isolation. Then decode and discuss a new text. |
| 2. Reread and Think More | Reread to build fluency and think more deeply, at the word level and across the text. |
| 3. Ponder and Write | Reread with a specific lens. Then discuss and write in response. |
| 4. Time to Talk | Reread using a task card to guide playful interaction. Then discuss with the whole class. |
